Aaron Kromer is leaving the New Orleans Saints to become the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears, a league source confirms.
The move is the next step for Kromer, the Saints? offensive line coach since 2009, to become a head coach, a position he has said is his goal.
ESPN?s Adam Schefter first reported Kromer?s job switch on Twitter.
Kromer served as New Orleans? interim coach for the first six games of 2012 while both coach Sean Payton and assistant head coach Joe Vitt served suspensions. Vitt became interim coach upon his return in the seventh game of the season.
When asked on the Monday after Vitt came back if running the team for six weeks enhanced his appetite in becoming a head coach, Kromer responded, ?Yes it does. Definitely.?
A year ago, the St. Louis Rams asked the Saints for permission to interview Kromer for their then-opening for a head coach. Meanwhile, this fall, Kromer emerged as a candidate to become Boston College?s head coach.
Kromer started with New Orleans in 2008 as the team?s running backs coach. He moved to his final position with the Saints a year later when Doug Marrone left to become the head coach at Syracuse.
With Payton still suspended, the Saints will have to wait to replace Kromer. In an interview with several reporters last week, general manager Mickey Loomis said all coaching staff moves would be made by Payton when he returns.
Under Kromer, the Saints went 2-4 to begin 2012, winning the final two games of his tenure as interim coach.
