An excommunicated Anglican bishop in this country in central African drove out the Anglicans and seized the Anglican churches, offices, schools, orphanages, bank accounts and other properties there. He and his followers did this with the help of the national Zimbabwe government, which he supported. Without churches, the Anglicans held services in Catholic churches, as well as public areas and homes there. Finally, after this sensational expropriation, the Supreme Court of the country ended this bad situation when it ordered this rebel bishop to return their property to the Anglicans.

I am wondering how independent is Zimbabwe's Supreme Court from political pressure? I think, a year ago, the Supreme Court (or at least the Chief Justice) ruled in favor of the excommunicated bishop and his land grab.

I have read some speculation that the ruling party in Zimbabwe, ZANU-PF, had previously supported him, but dropped that support since it was obvious that the excommunicated bishop essentially had no constituency and the controversy wasn't benefiting their rule.

I know little about Zimbabwe, other than occasional news stories, so I would appreciate any insights that members can offer.
