Grand Strand Humane Society seeks $1 donations

MYRTLE BEACH -- Although even in the current economy $1 can buy a lottery ticket, a junior cheeseburger deluxe from Wendy?s or even a song on iTunes, officials at the Grand Strand Humane Society hope that Myrtle Beach area residents can spare that dollar to help homeless and abandoned animals.

The shelter launched its fifth annual Dollars for Dogs fundraiser and asks everyone in the community to donate $1 during the holiday season with a goal of raising $5,000. The campaign runs through Dec. 31.

?We know the economy has had an effect on every person in the Grand Strand area over the last few years,? Executive Director Sandy Brown said in a press release. ?The shelter has also suffered the lasting effects, so we felt if everyone could just spare a dollar donation it would make such a difference to the unwanted, abandoned and abused animals of our community.?

In previous years, the fundraiser has exceeded its goal, bringing in more than $5,000 last year.

?The money that?s raised will go for medicine, for food and for bedding. A lot goes for medicine because [our] medical expenses are really high,? Brown said.

Brown said the mindset of those at the Humane Society is that most people want to help, but not everyone can give $100. She said that although the shelter only asks for $1 donations, many people give more.

?People donate more, but we are happy to get the dollar as well,? she said.

The shelter took in more than 100 animals within a week from two pet hoarding cases this summer, Brown said. That?s placed greater pressure on the Humane Society, which Brown said works very hard not to euthanize adoptable animals.

?We?re in more desperate need [of help] this year,? she said. ?Every dollar donation is vitally important to assist us in saving lives and finding permanent homes for each [of] our over 300 precious animals.?

Anyone who would like to donate to the Grand Strand Humane Society can mail or drop off the donation at 3241 Mr. Joe White Ave. in Myrtle Beach. The shelter is open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
