22nd Especially for You? Race Against Breast Cancer set Oct. 7 ...

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (Aug. 20, 2012) ? It?s time to register for the 22nd annual Especially For You? (EFY) Race Against Breast Cancer. Race day is Sun., Oct. 7. The race is co-founded by Mercy Medical Center and General Mills.

Mercy has made some changes to the race route this year to better accommodate the growing number of participants. The race will begin at 8 a.m. just outside the Hall-Perrine Cancer Center on 10th St. SE. Post-race activities will take place on 8th St. between 4th Ave. and 5th Ave. SE, just north of the Mercy campus.

A breast cancer survivor?s photo will be taken at 7:30 a.m. on race day on the lawn in front of the Hall-Perrine Cancer Center. Opening ceremonies for the race will start at 7:45 a.m. The competitive 5K run is for women only, but men are invited to participate as non-competitors. The 5K walk and the one-mile family fun walk are open to everyone.

Teams can register for the race online at www.especiallyforyourace.org until Sept. 2. Team packets can be turned in on Sept. 4th from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. or on Sept. 6th from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Lundy Pavilion at Mercy Medical Center. Individuals can register online through Sept. 30, and in person up until 7:30 a.m. on race day. Early registration is encouraged. In addition to offering registration options, the EFY website allows race participants to access breast cancer resources, order EFY merchandise and share personal stories electronically.

Race organizers expect record-setting registration again this year. Last year 15,793 people took part to support the EFY fund, which is used locally and provides breast care services such as mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsies and support services for individuals in need. In 2011, 628 individuals received 889 services.

The race and the fund are dedicated to the memory of Sandy Knight, a Whittier resident and General Mills employee who died of breast cancer in July 1991. She helped organize Mercy?s Especially For You After Breast Cancer Support Group. Her dream was to establish a race to raise funds for breast cancer awareness and education.

Those who register for the race receive an EFY t-shirt and goodie bag. This year?s t-shirt color is bright green.

For more information, visit www.especiallyforyourace.org or call the EFY race line at (319) 398-6582. In addition to the online registration option, race registration forms and information can be downloaded from the race website or may also be picked up at Mercy?s Especially for You office at the main hospital campus or at the Mercy Fitness Center, 5264 Council St. NE.

Breast cancer is most treatable and curable when detected in its earliest stages. Even so, breast cancer claims an estimated 39,520 lives each year. This number can be reduced with early detection through clinical breast exam and mammography.
