What's on tap at the NSA? Google's and Yahoo's private fiber backbones

If you needed more proof that our nation's industrial surveillance complex has gone completely off the rails, look no further than today's Washington Post. There you will find another blockbuster story on NSA spying that should make your blood boil, assuming it isn't already hot enough to cook an egg.

Bottom line: The spooks are tapping into private fiber backbones operated overseas by Google and Yahoo, decrypting all the traffic before it gets into their private clouds, storing copies, and re-encrypting it before sending it on its way. And yes, this is another gift from Edward Snowden.

Per the Post's Barton Gellman and independent security wonk Ashkan Soltani:

According to a top secret accounting dated Jan. 9, 2013, NSA's acquisitions directorate sends millions of records every day from Yahoo and Google internal networks to data warehouses at the agency's Fort Meade headquarters. In the preceding 30 days, the report said, field collectors had processed and sent back 181,280,466 new records -- ranging from "metadata," which would indicate who sent or received e-mails and when, to content such as text, audio and video.

The story is accompanied by a hand-drawn illustration showing how and where the wires get tapped, along with a smiley face indicating (one assumes) a happy NSA agent now swimming in unencrypted data.

Yahoo & Google: Not happy campers
Unlike PRISM, in which major tech firms respond to legal requests for data from the spooks, this program, known in NSA parlance by the code name "Muscular," appears to be a complete surprise to both Google and Yahoo, who sound none too happy about it. The difference between each tech company's fierce denial of the original claims about PRISM -- that they had allowed the NSA "direct access" to their networks -- and their response to this revelation is pretty telling. Per the Post article:

In a statement, Google said it was "troubled by allegations of the government intercepting traffic between our data centers, and we are not aware of this activity...."

At Yahoo, a spokeswoman said: "We have strict controls in place to protect the security of our data centers, and we have not given access to our data centers to the NSA or to any other government agency...."

Two engineers with close ties to Google exploded in profanity when they saw the drawing. "I hope you publish this," one of them said.

Google now selling Glass accessories to Explorer Edition owners

There isn't exactly a huge market for Google Glass accessories when there are several thousand wearers, but you've got to start somewhere, right? Accordingly, Google has begun selling peripherals to Explorer Edition owners. Only one item, a $75 clear visor for the Glass redesign, is in stock; an ...

Twitter gets more visual with photo, video previews

October 29, 2013

By Zach Miners | IDG News Service

Twitter became an Internet phenom as a tool for posting short text messages, but now it also wants to feature multimedia content more prominently.

[ Get your websites up to speed with HTML5 today using the techniques in InfoWorld's HTML5 Deep Dive PDF how-to report. | For a quick, smart take on the news you'll be talking about, check out InfoWorld TechBrief -- subscribe today. ]

Previews of photos and videos will now appear on users' timeline streams, whereas before people had to click on links to see them. The new feature is available on Twitter's iOS and Android apps, as well as on its Web version.

The changes apply only to photos uploaded using Twitter, and to videos created with Twitter's Vine app. People still have to navigate to an outside page to see photos or videos from third-party services.

Users can expand the photos or watch the videos by tapping them on mobile and clicking on them on the desktop.

With this feature, Twitter wants to provide a more media-rich experience for users and to better compete against big rivals like Instagram and Snapchat. "These rich tweets can bring your followers closer to what's happening," the company said in its announcement.

But the changes also come as Twitter faces pressure to build out its advertising business, as its public debut on the New York Stock Exchange looms.

Video ads constitute a major element of Twitter's advertising business, which generated 85 percent of the company's revenue last year, the company said on its IPO documents. Placing more video and photo content front and center in users' feeds, therefore, could give marketers an added incentive to advertise with Twitter.

Twitter has already partnered with more than a dozen broadcasters and media networks through its Amplify program, which places promotional video content in users' feeds. Some of those partners include Bloomberg TV, A&E, and BBC America.

(AP) — Jubilant Red Sox fans have taken to the streets around Fenway Park to cheer their team's World Series victory, the first time Boston has won baseball's fall classic at home in 95 years.

Fans chanted and caroused outside the historic ballpark Wednesday after Boston vanquished the St. Louis Cardinals 6-1 in Game 6. Police reported no significant problems immediately following the game but said they were ready for post-game celebrations.

The Red Sox have now won three World Series in a decade, but they hadn't won at home since 1918.

The triumphant fans spilling out of Fenway joined hundreds already gathered around the ballpark.

Russ Stappen paid several hundred dollars for a ticket but says it was a small price to be a part of Red Sox history.

Cole Miller: “Unqualified People” Are Judging MMA

Cole Miller scored a big win at UFC Fight Night 30 last weekend, as the American Top Team featherweight worked his way to a unanimous decision win over Andy Ogle. Since Miller had lost three of his last four fights heading into the October 26th scrap, a defeat may have ended the fighter’s UFC run, which dates way back to 2007.

While Miller doesn’t contest the fact that his job may have been on the line versus Ogle, he doesn’t believe he’s 2-2 in his last four bouts. The reason being that Miller doesn’t think the judges got it right when he was handed a split decision loss versus Nam Pham, or more recently at UFC FN 26 when he lost by UD to Manny Gamburyan (which many folks believe should have been stopped in Miller’s favor to begin with after round one).

Thus, this is why Miller blasted judges in his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan last Saturday, and why “Magrino” made the following comments while appearing on the latest edition of “The MMA Hour” (comments via MMA Fighting.com).

“I knew I had to win,” Miller said.  ”I’ve kind of been up and down, but I’ve only been up and down because of what some 50 and 60-year-old judges have said about my fights. If you actually went back and looked at them, as far as I’m concerned, this is four wins in a row.”

“They’re not even qualified to be making the calls they’re making,” Miller added while referring to judges. “That’s kind of disgusting and that’s really unfortunate in our sport, because it changes the whole landscape of our sport. When you have unqualified people judging mixed martial arts, it changes the way that mixed martial arts is actually fought, because fighters are now adjusting their styles to please people that don’t know anything about our sport.”

“I love this sport,” Miller continued. “I really do. And I want to see it make progress. I don’t want to see it regress. With the judging in mixed martial arts, and how coaches are coaching the fighters, and how fighters are manipulating and molding their styles to please people that know nothing about MMA, it makes the sport regress.”

It’s certainly not the first time a fighter has fired away at the status-quo in terms of judging, and even if you don’t believe it’s as dire as Miller says, improvements need to be made. Particularly in situations where, as Miller alluded to, fighters are given rounds for just maintaining the top position rather than inflicting damage.

AT&T offering free Galaxy Tab 3 with high-end Samsung phones

Galaxy Tab 3

7-inch Galaxy Tab 3 free with Galaxy S4, S4 Active, Note 3 or Note 2 on contract

AT&T's hoping to pick up a few extra subscribers in the run up to the holidays by offering a free Samsung tablet to buyers of four of the company's leading Galaxy smartphones. From today customers picking up the Galaxy S4, S4 Active, Note 3 or Note 2 on a two-year plan (or through the AT&T Next installment program) can claim a free 7-inch Galaxy Tab 3 tablet (also on contract). The deal is available from participating stores today and will be extended to AT&T's online presence in the near future, the carrier says.

The Galaxy Tab 3 7-inch isn't Samsung's highest-end tablet and we weren't exactly blown away by the Tab 3 series when reviewed the them earlier this year, but you can't really argue with free. The promotion runs until Jan. 9, 2014.

Tesla Officially Opens West Coast Supercharger Circuit, Covering San Diego To Vancouver

Tesla’s West Coast Supercharger Corridor opened today, making it possible for owners of the Model S to travel free between San Diego and Vancouver, using Highway 101 and Interstate 5. This makes a Supercharger reachable within 200 miles to over 99 percent of Californians and 87 percent of those in Oregon and Washington.

A lot of attention has been paid to Tesla’s efforts to make a coast-to-coast trip in one of its vehicles a reality, via Superchargers and other charging stations, but blanketing the West Coast means that Tesla S owners can now travel from essentially the Mexican border to within the Canadian one without paying any money to fill their cars, and with a minimal amount of charging time required. Superchargers can charge a Tesla S to a capacity worth around 200 miles of driving distance in just 30 minutes, and the stations are positioned near restaurants and shopping centers to give you something to do while your car powers up.

To promote the new corridor, Tesla is having two Model S vehicles make the trip from San Diego to Vancouver, and they’ll be pushing updates to their various social media properties along the way. Spoiler alert: those cars are definitely going to make it without incident.

Supercharger rollout continues globally, with Tesla announcing plans in September to cover 100 percent of the population of Switzerland, Belgium, Austria, Denmark and Luxembourg, and 90 percent of the population in England, Wales, and Sweden with a station within 320 kms by the end of 2014. Getting past that basic excuse of “I can’t buy one, there’s nowhere to charge” is clearly a huge part of the company’s global rollout strategy, which is why each of these Supercharger network expansions is a big win for Tesla and for founder Elon Musk.
