Film review: 'Warm Bodies' brings life to zombie and romance ...

It?s a toss-up which genre more needs the adrenaline boost "Warm Bodies" provides: the zombie movie or the romantic comedy.

This hybrid follows R (Nicholas Hoult), an undead young man who still maintains some vague memories of life before the zombie infestation that?s turned most of America into slow-moving undead. The zombies are split between "corpses" like R and his pal M (Rob Corddry), who try to hold on to a semblance of humanity, and "skeletons" (aka "bonies") who are just ruthless flesh-eating monsters.

Opens Friday, Feb. 1, at theaters everywhere; rated PG-13 for zombie violence and some language; 97 minutes.

When R encounters the pretty and feisty Julie (Teresa Palmer), whose father (John Malkovich) commands the last human outpost, R has his first stirrings of human emotion ? while also eating the brains of Julie?s boyfriend Perry (Dave Franco), thus reliving Perry?s memories and feelings. Soon, R?s crush on Julie starts to affect the other zombies, signaling a change that could bring peace to the raging human-zombie war.

Director-screenwriter Jonathan Levine ("50/50"), adapting Isaac Marion?s novel, plays with zombie-movie conventions (using R?s funny and observational voice-over) and steals some moves from Shakespeare to create a teen romance no more awkward than most.

Hoult ("X-Men: First Class") and Palmer (who?s like Kristen Stewart, except blond and capable of smiling) have a chemistry that brings this zombie story to life.

Randy Travis admits driving drunk, gets probation

SHERMAN, Texas (AP) ? Randy Travis pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated Thursday in a case that began last summer when the country music star was found naked after crashing his Pontiac Trans Am.

Travis received two years of probation, a $2,000 fine and a 180-day suspended jail sentence. If he doesn't successfully complete the probation, he will face the jail time.

He was ordered to spend at least 30 days at an alcohol treatment facility, complete 100 hours of community service and have an ignition interlock device on any vehicle he operates while on probation.

Travis, 53, entered the plea in a court in the North Texas city of Sherman. The misdemeanor was punishable by up to one year in jail and a $4,000 fine.

As the singer walked out of the Grayson County Courthouse, he thanked the court and his supporters. He also acknowledged two patrolmen for "obviously taking care of me that night."

"I'm glad it's behind me," he said of the case.

Authorities have said a Trans Am registered to Travis veered off a road Aug. 7 near Tioga, a town about 60 miles north of Dallas where the entertainer lives. The car struck several barricades in a construction zone.

Prosecutors said Travis was found lying in the roadway naked and was belligerent at the scene and while being transported to a hospital. He had a blood alcohol level of 0.21. The legal limit for driving is 0.08.

The country star, whose hits include "Forever and Ever, Amen," walked out of jail the next morning wearing scrubs, no shoes and a baseball cap.

Travis also had faced a charge of retaliation for allegedly threatening officers, but as part of the plea agreement he will no longer face that charge.

Grayson County District Attorney Joe Brown said Travis' punishment is appropriate and "considerably more than is typically received on a DWI case."

"First time DWI defendants are rarely forced into in-patient treatment," Brown said in a news release. "He will be unable to leave the facility for 30 days. His fine and community service requirements are more than double what is usually received, and his probation term is the maximum available, and longer than the usual 18 months. All of that is appropriate in light of his behavior with the officers."

On Thursday, the judge in the case agreed with a defense motion asking that the arrest video and transcript not be released to the public.

Travis' lawyers have previously said the singer has a great deal of respect for law enforcement and has stopped drinking alcohol.

The August accident was among a string of recent run-ins with the law for Travis.

Police in suburban Dallas cited Travis following an Aug. 23 incident in a church parking lot in which he allegedly intervened in an argument involving a woman he knows and her estranged husband. Nobody was hurt.

Larry Friedman, one of his attorneys, said Travis pleaded no contest in that case in January. In an agreement with prosecutors, he got 90 days' deferred adjudication, meaning it will be removed from his record if he does not get involved in another assault in that time period.

Travis also was arrested last February in Denton County, northwest of Dallas, for public intoxication after police spotted a vehicle parked in front of a church and found an open bottle of wine and Travis smelling of alcohol. That case is no longer on file with the county court and appears to have been dismissed.

Twitter back up, 'incident resolved'

Yes, Twitter is down.?At 10:28 a.m. ET, the company's status page indicated only that "Some users may be experiencing issues accessing Twitter. Our engineers are currently working to resolve the issue."

It could perhaps be related to the major update Twitter rolled out Wednesday, providing better viewing of large photos, and greater compatibility for Web video.

We'll keep watching for its return, or any further?indication as to what caused the outage, so stay tuned.

Updated 10:50 a.m. ET: Twitter.com appears to be up, but downforeveryoneorjustme.com is still reporting it to be down.

Updated 2:50 p.m. ET: Twitter updated its status page with the following statement:

Carbon backup app launches on Google Play [updated]

Update: Whoops. Koush sends word that Carbon wasn't quite ready to go when we posted and that the folks in the forums spotted it early. It's not "live" live, so make sure you have the most recent version.

After a couple of weeks in beta, Koushik Dutta -- aka Koush -- has released his Carbon backup app on Google Play. The app uses Android's built-in backup feature to sync apps -- and crucially, app data -- to the SD card or cloud storage. If you're rooted, you just need the app itself. If not, there's an accompanying desktop app that can help you sync an unrooted phone.

A word of warning for Motorola users -- the app isn't available for Moto devices due to a bug in these phones which prevents Android's backup features from working correctly. A manual download link is provided on the Play Store listing for those running custom ROMs, or anyone who just wants to try anyway.

Carbon comes in two flavors -- there's a free version, which offers an basic ad-supported service. Then there's an ad-free premium version, which costs $4.99 and adds in more advanced stuff like Android-to-Android sync and cloud storage sync.

Both apps are available for phones running Android 4.0 or above -- hit the Google Play link above to grab the basic version, or head over here for the premium version.

Iowa brokerage head gets 50 years for embezzlement

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) ? A judge sentenced Peregrine Financial Group Inc. founder Russ Wasendorf Sr. to 50 years in prison on Thursday for stealing $215 million from investors and concealing his theft for 20 years.

U.S. District Judge Linda Reade told Wasendorf at the hearing in Cedar Rapids that he knowingly caused "staggering losses" to investors, employees and creditors that grew larger over 20 years.

Reade said Wasendorf, 64, lacked the courage to stop his fraud sooner and admit his company was a failure from its inception in the early 1990s.

She also said the collapse of Peregrine Financial Group had rippled across the financial industry, affecting regulatory agencies and the nation as whole.

"By imposing a substantial sentence, the court sends a message that white collar criminals may serve long prison sentences for stealing money from other people," Reade said.

Wasendorf appeared frail at the sentencing. His attorney said he'd lost a substantial amount of weight while being held in jail.

Before the sentencing, Wasendorf issued a broad apology for the damage he caused and said he would accept any sentence imposed.

Wasendorf pleaded guilty in September to misusing at least $100 million to cover business losses at his Cedar Falls-based brokerage, which did business as PFGBest, and a range of personal expenses. He admitted that he hid the theft from colleagues and regulators by making phony financial statements for nearly two decades.

Wasendorf was found unconscious outside the company's headquarters last July after attempting suicide in his vehicle by connecting a tube to his exhaust pipe. He left a startling suicide note confessing to the fraud, saying he started stealing because his "ego was too big to fail," that he did not feel bad about duping regulators he felt were overzealous, and had learned to make "convincing forgeries" of bank and financial statements using printers and scanners.

Regulators immediately discovered PFGBest could not account for more than $200 million in customer funds it was supposed to be holding, and the firm filed for bankruptcy protection. Some 24,000 customers were unable to access their accounts and still have not been fully reimbursed. Customers who opened accounts to trade commodities have received between 30 and 40 percent of their money back, while customers who traded foreign currency have received nothing because that activity has less legal protection.

Wasendorf used their money to build up a business empire that included a publishing company, a corporate jet, the nicest restaurant in Cedar Falls, and a family charity known for making donations to universities and hospitals.

Customer money also helped build what was perhaps the biggest symbol of Wasendorf's home-grown success with a firm he started in a basement 30 years ago: PFG's $20 million headquarters, a three-story glass building that opened in 2009 and included a gym, a daycare center, a Montessori school, and a restaurant. Today, the building is largely empty and up for sale.
